Since the beginning of human civilization, the Sun has always held the attention of humanity and its potential of solar energy to produce light and heat. During 1870s, Auguste Mouchout was the first person to patent a design for a motor powered on solar energy, following by designing a device that converted solar energy into mechanical steam power and soon operated the first steam engine. In 1956, the first commercial solar cell was made available to public and later, in 1960s, space programs employed solar technologies to generate electricity. In recent years, local governments across the world are offering financial assistance to homes, businesses and industries to switch to solar electric systems.

Scarcity of resources and the damage to the environment are the most obvious disadvantages of oil, gas and coal. Moreover, fossil fuels, fossil fuel power stations and centralized power also make our society dependent on external, inconsistent and unreliable sources.

Solar energy is the fastest growing renewable energy source in the world and has shown tremendous growth in the last 2-3 years. This has been driven by a more than 50% decline in solar photovoltaic (PV) costs which continues to decline further. With further increase in energy prices, solar power is becoming closer and closer to retail electricity price. Not only is the price declining, solar power is clean energy a most valuable feature in these days of accelerating climate change. Solar energy has already reached grid parity in places like Italy and Hawaii and will do so in more places in the coming 2-3 years. The industry is a dynamic one and the list of top solar companies can change quickly. Rapid technological change and fast declining costs have pushed out most of the Top 10 companies of 5 years ago and brought in new ones.
